My name is Tom Conway. I’m a commercial carpenter in Minneapolis Minnesota. I have been a bird lover for a long time. I have many bird feeders but my favorite is the suet feeder. I like to watch the Chickadees, Nuthatch’s and woodpeckers fly in to eat off the suet basket. I noticed in a very short time with the suet cake exposed, the Starlings could eat one cake a day. So I created a suet cake cover out of cardboard, wrapped it with duct tape and slid it over the suet basket. I could adjust it up or down depending on whether the starlings were around. It worked great. I used this for about three years. One Saturday morning I was looking at the cover I had made. I mentioned to my wife, Penelope, that I should probably rewrap the suet cover with duct tape because it was getting ratty looking. She said why don’t you just make one. Then the idea hit me. That’s it! I will make one to sell. People will buy these things.
So I contacted a friend of mine, Dennis Krampotich. His occupation is a designer.
I asked him if he would design a suet basket cover for me. Several months later, after
much thought and research, we had a suet basket enclosure design. I have named it the
Starling Stumper. It is a plastic UV protected enclosure. It slides over the suet
basket. It adjusts up or down by slipping the chain into a small slotted hole at the top
of the enclosure. I have protected my idea by applying for a patent, which is pending. We
have been working on this invention for about three years, and it is finally ready to go.
The enclosures keep off about 95% or better of the starlings. Starlings can’t fly in and
land on the enclosure upside down when it is lowered. This prevents the Starlings and other
large birds from eating the suet cake. The Chickadees, Nuthatches, and Woodpeckers are able
to position themselves upside down and eat the suet cake. The Starling Stumper protects your
suet from the Starlings. The suet cake will last up to weeks longer. Which saves
you money.
